At Apple's WWDC presentation next week, it's possible that significant modifications to the iOS lock screen could be announced. Bloomberg's Mark Grumman disclosed in the newest issue of his Power On newsletter that Apple has been working on a new always-on display capability for the iOS lock screen that could be exclusive to new iPhones releasing this Fall.
"Apple is contemplating big lock screen enhancements, including wallpapers with widget-like functionality," Gurman stated. "Furthermore, I'm told that iOS 16 includes future support for an always-on lock screen, which Apple had planned for the iPhone 13 last year." This would allow the iPhone to display instantly glanceable information while lowering the frame rate on the lock screen, similar to how newer Apple Watches do."
According to Gurman, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models may be the only ones with the new always-on lock screen. A smaller notch hiding a new front-facing camera, a 48MP back camera, a speedier A16 CPU, and capabilities for sending emergency texts over satellite networks are all possible additions to the top-of-the-line iPhone models.
Gurman also made some predictions regarding the rest of Apple's software platforms: iPadOS 16 is expected to redesign multitasking (which is still a weakness on Apple's tablets), and watchOS could include new low-power mode and modifications to watch faces. Some Apple apps on macOS may be redesigned, with System Preferences perhaps adopting cues from the iOS Settings app.
